This 1957 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is a “Lowlight” coupe that was ordered new through Midwestern Volkswagen in Columbus, Ohio, and was picked up from the Volkswagen factory in Osnabrück, Germany, by the original owner, who drove the car for a year in Europe while studying abroad before shipping the car to Ohio. It remained under the care of the original owner until 1996 and subsequently underwent a cosmetic and mechanical refurbishment that culminated in the car earning awards from the Antique Automobile Club of America, which included “Senior National First Prize” in 2016 and “Senior Grand National” in 2018. The car was also featured in the September/October 2017 issue of Antique Automobile as well as the Antique Automobile Club of America’s 2019 calendar. The car is finished in Toucan Black over two-tone gray upholstery and is powered by a 1,192cc air-cooled flat-four paired with a split-case four-speed manual transaxle. Additional details include 15″ steel wheels, bias-ply whitewall tires, drum brakes, a fuel reserve lever, an analog clock, a 6-volt electrical system, and chrome bumpers with overriders.
Built from 1955 to 1959, “Lowlight” models featured lower-set headlights along with smaller grilles and taillights. This example left the factory finished in Toucan Black (L41) and was refinished under prior ownership. Exterior details include bullet-style turn indicators, a left side-view mirror, polished trim, dual “pea shooter” exhaust outlets, and chrome bumpers with overriders.
The 15″ steel wheels wear chrome VW-stamped hubcaps and polished trim rings, and they are mounted with 5.60-15 US Royal Laredo whitewall bias-ply tires. Stopping power is provided by drum brakes at each corner.
The interior features thin back bucket seats, a folding rear bench, and door panels are trimmed in light gray vinyl with white piping and dark gray cloth inserts in addition to German square-weave carpets, a rubber floor mat, and a mohair headliner.
The two-spoke steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation including a 90-mph speedometer and an analog clock. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 39k miles.
The 1,192cc air-cooled flat-four sends power to the rear wheels through a split-case four-speed manual transaxle.
